Consultation and Reflective Practice

Helping professionals and carers think about complex situations

I provide consultation and reflective practice for professionals, carers, teams and organisations working with children, young people and families.

These spaces offer an opportunity to pause, think together and develop a deeper understanding of situations that may feel complex, emotionally demanding or difficult to resolve.

Consultation

Consultation may be helpful when a child or young person’s behaviour, relationships or emotional needs are proving difficult to understand.

Drawing on psychoanalytic and developmental thinking, I can help participants consider what may be communicated through behaviour, how relationships within the wider system may be affecting the situation and what forms of support might be most helpful.

Consultation may include consideration of:

  • emotional, behavioural or relationship difficulties
  • trauma and distressing experiences
  • complex family or care relationships
  • communication between families and professionals
  • professional boundaries and roles
  • the emotional impact of the work
  • safeguarding, risk and wider professional responsibilities

Reflective practice

Reflective practice gives professionals and carers protected time to consider their experiences and the feelings generated by their work.

The purpose is not simply to find an immediate solution. It is to create enough space to think, notice patterns and develop a more considered understanding of the people and relationships involved.

Reflective practice can support individuals and groups to:

  • remain thoughtful when work feels pressured or uncertain
  • recognise the emotional effect of caring and professional roles
  • explore relationships and patterns within a team or network
  • understand different professional perspectives
  • strengthen communication and collaborative working
  • maintain appropriate boundaries and sustainable ways of working

Who this is for

Consultation and reflective practice may be suitable for:

  • foster carers and other carers
  • psychotherapists and mental-health practitioners
  • social-care and education professionals
  • multidisciplinary teams
  • services and organisations supporting children and families

Arrangements

Consultation may be arranged as a single meeting or a short series of meetings. Reflective practice can be provided individually or for an established group or team.

Meetings may take place in person or online, depending on the needs and location of those involved.

Consultation and reflective practice do not replace an organisation’s safeguarding procedures, management responsibilities or formal clinical supervision.
